SusKinder dissemination seminar in Bulgaria

23. 08. 2018

Outdoor learning and practical training in planting of herbs and flowers was held in “Prolet” kindergarten in the village of Parvenets, Rodopi municipality. Children created an even more colorful kindergarten’s yard by planting roses, carnations and gerberas. Besides being a lot of fun, kid-led gardening presented great opportunities to learn about the environment, healthy eating and life cycles.

Children were introduced to the magical world of herbs.  Together they planted summer savoury, basil, celery , mint. Summer savoury one of the most traditional Bulgarian spices. It is an annual plant with a specific herbal taste. Its leaves, whether dried or fresh, is an integral part of the preparation of many favorite dishes as lentils, green beans, peas, beans, potatoes, stew etc.

The outdoor learning was organized as a dissemination activity within the Sustainable food in kindergartens project.  The project is implemented under the Erasmus+, Key Action 2: Cooperation for innovation and the exchange of good practices - Strategic partnership in the field of education. University of agribusiness and rural development participated in the project together with partners from Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Austria, Czech Republic and the United Kingdom.

A workshop with pedagogues, kitchen and administrative staff from the kindergarten was held in the afternoon. Presentation included general information about project’s outputs, the e-learning course development process, content and advice on online learning tools etc.  Examples of good practice from partner countries have prompted the strongest attention and fruitful discussion.  Participants in the seminar discussed different areas for action when it comes to food. The general opinion was that interdependencies between healthy children, food or caterer choice and procurement, environment and climate are essential for strong local food systems. Nutrition education curriculum must make the connection between local food systems, garden-based learning and kindergarten food services and contribute to developing sustainable food culture und healthy eating habits in early childhood. The link between the environmental and education perspectives can be achieved through networking among different actors. By raising children 's knowledge about the environmental impact of food produce and involve them in the food process, from product to plate, we help them to understand what and how we eat and the impact it has on our personal health and the environment.
